BUILDING
SOMETHING
WORTH KEEPING.
Sustainability is bigger than recycling. Responsibility is bigger than writing a policy.
For The Joined, it means thinking seriously about how we grow, how we use resources, how we treat people and what kind of creative community we help create.
GROWTH SHOULDN’T MEAN CARELESS GROWTH.
Digital platforms can grow quickly. That does not mean every decision should be made quickly.
Infrastructure, moderation, accessibility, advertising, partnerships, data use and community culture all create consequences.
We want The Joined to develop with those consequences in mind, rather than treating them as somebody else’s problem later.
WITH
INTENT.
DIGITAL DOESN’T MEAN RESOURCE-FREE.
INFRASTRUCTURE
Websites, databases, media storage and cloud services all use energy and physical infrastructure.
EFFICIENCY
Lean, responsive systems can reduce unnecessary processing and data transfer.
STORAGE
A media platform needs sensible approaches to uploads, optimisation, retention and duplication.
LONGEVITY
Building systems that can evolve is better than constantly starting again.
SUPPLIERS
Infrastructure providers and technology partners form part of our wider environmental footprint.
KEEP IMPROVING
We do not claim to have zero impact. We aim to understand our footprint better and reduce avoidable waste.
OLD DOESN’T MEAN USELESS.
Cameras change hands. Instruments get repaired. Props get rebuilt. Costumes get altered. Equipment moves between productions.
Creative people have always understood the value of making things last.
As The Joined develops, we want future marketplace and community tools to help people reuse, share, resell and repurpose equipment.
REUSE.
PASS IT ON.
SUSTAINABILITY ALSO MEANS PEOPLE.
ACCESS
Free membership helps reduce the financial barrier to participating.
NEW TALENT
Beginners and students deserve opportunities, not exploitation disguised as experience.
SAFETY
Reporting, moderation and clear expectations must be part of the community.
PRIVACY
Personal information should be collected and used responsibly.
RESPECT
Credit people fairly and respect the effort behind creative work.
OPPORTUNITY
A useful network should open doors rather than reinforce closed circles.
A COMMUNITY ISN’T OPEN IF PEOPLE CAN’T USE IT.
Accessibility belongs in product design, not at the end of a development checklist.
That means readable interfaces, responsive layouts, keyboard usability, sensible labelling, understandable navigation and consideration for assistive technologies.
We expect accessibility to be an ongoing process as the platform grows and new features are introduced.
FOR
PEOPLE.
BIGGER ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER.
TEST LOCALLY
Bristol gives us a real creative community in which to test and improve ideas.
GROW CAREFULLY
Expansion should preserve the character and usefulness of local communities.
LISTEN
Member feedback should inform tools, policies and experiences.
FIX WHAT BREAKS
Growth creates new problems. A responsible platform faces them and improves.
A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS. NOT A SELL-OUT.
The Joined needs a viable business model to exist for the long term.
Paid memberships and company subscriptions can support the platform, alongside potential future advertising, partnerships, events and services.
Commercial activity should be clear, relevant and proportionate. We want revenue to support creative people and useful experiences—not turn the community into something to exploit.
VALUE.
NOT NOISE.
USEFUL TECHNOLOGY. NOT TECH FOR SHOW.
DATA
Collect what is genuinely needed and handle it responsibly.
AUTOMATION
Automate where it helps, without abandoning necessary human judgement.
AI
Use AI tools thoughtfully, with transparency and respect for creative work.
HUMANS
Technology should help people connect with people—not replace the point of the community.
WE BUILD THE PLATFORM. MEMBERS BUILD THE CULTURE.
No policy, moderator or algorithm can create a healthy creative community alone.
Members shape the atmosphere through the way they communicate, collaborate, offer opportunities, credit contributions and treat newcomers.
The Joined has responsibilities as an operator. Members also have responsibilities to one another.

THE PLACE
BETTER.
SUPPORTED BY LEVLAN.
The Joined operates with business, technical and operational support from Levlan.
That includes responsibility for the systems, commercial structure and operational decisions behind the platform.
As The Joined grows, sustainability and social responsibility should inform those decisions—not be treated as separate marketing exercises.
LONG-TERM RESPONSIBILITYBUILD.MEASURE.
IMPROVE.
NOT PERFECTION. CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT.
REDUCE WASTE
Design systems and infrastructure with efficiency in mind.
INCREASE ACCESS
Keep participation open and usable wherever reasonably possible.
ACT RESPONSIBLY
Treat privacy, safety and governance as fundamental responsibilities.
KEEP LEARNING
Update our practices when better evidence, tools and methods become available.
HAVE AN IDEA? TALK TO US.
If you have a question about The Joined’s environmental, social or operational responsibilities—or an idea that could help us do better—we’d like to hear it.
Useful feedback is part of building something worth keeping.
QUESTIONS, IDEAS OR SOMETHING WE SHOULD KNOW?
The Joined is still growing, and hearing from the people it is being built for is part of that process.
VALUE PEOPLE.
WASTE LESS.
Build for the long term.
